LEARN ABOUT LIGHTNINGS

Dernière mise à jour : 4 oct. 2023

A selection of the best lightnings and storm photographies as well as a very detailed text.

LOOK DOWN TO LEARN MORE ABOUT LIGHTNINGS AND TORNADOES.

WHAT CAUSES LIGHTNINGS ?

Lightnings are an electric current. Within a thundercloud way up in the sky, many small bits of ice (frozen raindrops) bump into each other as they move around in the air. All of those collisions create an electric charge.

After a while, the whole cloud fills up with electrical charges.

The positive charges or protons from at the top of the cloud. Since opposites attract, that causes a positive charge to build up on the ground beneath the cloud. The grounds electrical charge concentrates around anything that sticks up , such as mountains , people, or single trees.

The charge coming up from these points eventually connects with a charge reaching down from the clouds and - zap -lightining strikes !

TORNADO AND HURRICANES

A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the Earth and cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud.

A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating stor system characterized by a low pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral...

" Hurricane Season " begins on June 1 and ends on November 30, although hurricanes can, and have, occurred outside of this time frame.

NOAA's Nationale Hurricane Center predicts and tracks these massive storm systems, which occur, on average, 12 times a year in the Atlantic basin.

It is estimated that there are around 1,800 thunderstorms that occur across our planet every day.
